Lanehead and Wellhope, Weardale, Co. Durham. Aug 2020.
Lanehead and Wellhope area in Weardale including a couple of old abandoned farms. I think that's most of Weardale covered though there's probably a few places missed. This is the last of the videos I made in Weardale a few years ago, a beautiful day spoiled by one of those blokes desperate to be offended about something making crazy accusations - you can see him near the end of the video.

Malton walk - no drones!

Just a walk in the rain around Malton near Lanchester. I don't usually post stuff like this but I enjoyed it so much. Thanks to my friends Bert and Teresa (you'll see them at the end) for the sound track 'Fix you' by Coldplay.

Last of the drone videos about the opencast at Bradley, it's been really interesting for me to follow the progress of this site, the enormous amount of material that was moved and the machines that moved it. Maybe now that Mr Putin is chopping the gas supplies, I'll get the chance to follow another one! It looks great now. Thanks to everyone who watched, especially those who left a comment. Mus...

A screen grab of my new flight simulator put together with some lively music. A complete change from the drone videos but I had fun making it. The USAF F14B takes off from Newcastle airport crossing Ryton, Crawcrook, Shotley bridge, The cement quarry at Easgate, Pooley bridge and Ulswater with a fair bit of flying around the lakes and landing at Carlisle. Leadgate (Bradley) opencast coming to a close fairly soon. Quite a controversial site since it began It's been fascinating to follow how they took the coal from the ground, exposing old underground workings here and there. Hard to see how they made a profit with all those huge machine to run and the enormous volume soil/clay/shale/rock that had to be moved. Music: Checkmate by Nathan Moore.

Speaking as a Lanehead resident, thanks for the lovely footage.🙂
@@FrankSmith57. Thank you Frank, I appreciate your comment and I’m pleased that you enjoyed the video . 🙂
Ohh I know a lady called flipper swims up that way
That's a flippant comment!
great drone footage john thanks for the view my brother and me took some years ago.
@@bigfoot-g4i thank Colin, one of the first drone videos I ever made.
Hey, great video. How do you access it on foot please, we want to be somewhere near on foot around 1:00 on your drone video? Where is a good place to park car?
Didnt you play croxdale folk club back in the day, circa 2008?
I did, still playing but at Dun Cow Acoustic club in Bournmoor, Houghton le spring. Croxdale is still going but I don't get there very often anymore.
@@assessorjohn I found a cd recording of a bishopfm folk show from march 2008 in which I was one of the guests alongside Phil Graham. Terry Ferdinand was the host and he played one of your songs and then we all talk about how you were playing Croxdale Folk club around that time.
My pleasure Lots of happy memories. Many thanks for sharing the footage
Our family rented this property from Raby Estates for around 15 years between mid 1960s to late 1970s. In common with all Raby estates properties we were required to whitewash the exterior every couple of years. Renovations and upgrades made it a very comfortable weekend and school holiday retreat despite no gas or electricity and an outside toilet in front garden. Our understanding was that the house was originally built for the manager of the nearby lead mines in early - mid 19th century. On handing the property back it remained empty thereafter and was eventually stripped of materials which we believe were recycled amongst other nearly Raby Estate dwellings.
@@MarkSowerby-q8m Thanks Mark, always lovely to hear about the history of these old places, especially from folks who have actually lived in them.
Outstanding footage. Your images really do the beautiful post industrial landscape justice. I love how the old mine workings blend with the "natural" landscape. (Which is probably more man made than most people think.)
Wonderful video John and great backing music. Gotta love the wilderness of the Durham fells
Cheers Eric, glad you enjoyed it.
iIlove watching all your videos keep it up, I felt like Im walking and hiking in all these areas whilst watching
Hi, thank you. Pleased you're enjoying the videos.
what a picturesque aerial video
Great to see you back on here with more great footage from our fabulous corner of the country.
Great footage and flying 👌
Thank you 😊
Hi again, I managed to get Christine Ruskin’s book today from the library. It’s a fantastic book and not only does it have a lot of Raine’s in that area there’s also a few other names I could be related to? Reed, Wearmouth etc this is going to take my research into the area much further than I first thought 😀 thanks again
Christine is an absolute mine of information on the area and its history. I flew the drone from her garden one day to try to see if we could find an old boundary. Such a lovely, friendly lady she must have done a huge amount of research to produce that book. She wrote a second one about the bread ovens built into many of the homes in Weardale. If you’re doing some research, a very useful tool is Durham county councils “Keys to the past” website which has interactive maps that can be reset to different eras, back as far as the 1800s. Good luck with your search.
@@assessorjohn Thank you very much John that’s really nice of you , I appreciate that 😀👍
Morning john. Welcome back mate .stunning and good editing as always. Those drones are amazing. Nice music. Ignore the bloke doesn't understand. Thank you sir .Old dave.
Cheers Dave, always great to hear from folks who watch these videos. This footage was taken a few years ago. I don’t fly the drone much anymore, the laws are so restrictive now, I expect they’ll want them tethered like a kite before long!
Totally understand and it's a shame. BLO... do gooders
Hi john , I’ve been retired year now . I love watching your videos, there’s the beautiful landscapes that we all love but you don’t hide the industrial heritage, that to be fair I think we’re both proud of too. My UA-cam account is linked to my old gmail account which I don’t ever check , but I’ve seen your previous replies to my video comments, albeit 6 months later ( usually when I’ve forgotten my passwords ) Stay safe and keep posting our fantastic region warts and all it’s who we are . Nigel Ps bump into Uncle Duncan in Washington Asda now and then .
Great video John, good choice of music well done mate.
Thanks Colin 😊
Hi John , once again a stunning video of our fantastic region, keep up the good work. Nigel ex NCD
Cheers Nigel. I see you’re now ex NCD, happy retirement mate.
Amazing views of the old mine workings, and across the bleak and beautiful moors, nearly fell asleep listening to the soothing music. Good stuff !
Thanks Tony, it’s great that a few folks watch these videos.
I have been to these before but now it just metal and grafrafi
A lovely song combined with a fitting video.
Thank you 😊
7 morons disliked this stunning footage? Why?
Hi John. Just seen your drone footage on TV...article on solo panels in a few fields. The residents won a argument on the dishes been put on the land..and they showed your drone footage flying over the fields Brilliant.mate old dave
I didn't see it Dave, they asked if it was ok AFTER they showed it on tv! Anyway, that's three of us know it was my footage 😁😁
Hi John. Is there anyway of contacting you by email? Would like to ask you about using this video
Hello Ian, just go ahead and use it, it’s fine, cheers.
Its Feb 2024 & I'm sat in a hotel room in Mauritius to escape the heat outside (35°c!!) & I'm watching your footage of Weardale & Teesdale instead. Started going up to Hill End as a bairn & 50 odd years later I still go up there regularly, at least once a week I reckon, often more. I absolutely love that place, the whole area infact, and as with many of your flights John, a whole new perspective & appreciation of the area opens up when seen from above. Always love your music choices too. Anyway, re/ Mauritius - it's canny, though not really my thing tbh - it was wor' lasses choice. Me - I'd far rather be tramping round Hill End & Bolihope in the driech & drizzle any time so thanks again for posting this one up.
Not keen on the hot weather either, but it’s awful here at the moment , cold with sleet and rain so I wouldn’t mind a a few warm days. My dad used to take us to Bolihope as kids and we always loved it, so I took my two lads there and now they love it too. I’ve explored the area quite a bit including underground in a few of the abandoned mines. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, glad you enjoyed the video and the music. Enjoy the rest of your holiday.
@@assessorjohn I'd happily swap you in an instant I swear! Just been looking online at pics of Edmundbyers in the snow yesterday & I'd be over there in a shot if I could. I mentioned to wor' lass earlier I need some time back up the Dale as soon as I get back. She understands.
Great drone footage and lovely music too. Stayed at a cottage at Low Bollihope last autumn and must get back there again as the area is stunning and so peaceful. Thank you for reminding me.
great concept , but you need to soften the pan motions on both the camera and drone filght settings.....default are too jerky.... ua-cam.com/video/zEI6PCxFUZY/v-deo.html
What a stunning video. I believe the quarry was owned by my Great Great Grandfather, Octavius Monkhouse. The old church above the quarry was moved brick by brick to the current village location. Some lovely shots of Cowshill and the “new” church, with my family burial plot, plus the hotel where Octavius was the landlord at some point. Thank you so much for producing and sharing.
Thank you Andrew, it’s always a great pleasure to hear from people with a connection to the places I’ve captured on video, I’m delighted you enjoyed it.
Thanks John, this was one of my favourite MTB training rides while I lived in Durham City, so many memories :)
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment Robert. Done it a few times myself, lovely route. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the video - with all it's rough edges!
What a beautiful part of our country it's a place I visit when the weather allows 👍👍 God's own country
I’m sure I’ve walked by as footpath close to it. Sad to look at from any angle and when I see these buildings i always wonder what is their story, why they were abandoned initially and how come nobody has developed the site? There are many of these scattered across our countryside, real shame imo.
Yes there's a footpath right by the main house,. It's a huge shame to see it in such a state, I seem to recall being told about a family dispute preventing its continued use.
I don't usually see things near Consett(where i live). This is a good video!
Great video. Didn’t realise that place was on our doorstep when I stayed at Lower Bolihope a month or so ago. Will definitely journey there again.
Beautiful footage John, as always. On Sunday I did a walk from Bowlees past Low, High and Bleabeck Force and then up Noon Hill and back via Howick Fell. A beautiful walk at anytime of the year. Cheers 👍
Thanks Tony, just about everywhere in that area is beautiful.
I used to help the Armstrong brothers who were tenant farmers at Gold hill, I believe they kept livestock here too and they also owned a farm called Brass Castle Coalburns near Greenside where I was brought up, so sad to see it like this.
its a stunning place that view right up the dale , what id call a bit of a dooer upper
The railway from Bishop Auckland and Tow Law ran through there and connected to the line to Rowley at Burnhill Junction. There was a station at Burnhill and a narrow gauge railway which ran into the munitions depot. The bunkers for the depot are still there. It’s all private property.
Brilliant video havent done this one for couple year deffinitly going back
I watched the beautiful film made in 1960 of the High Mass at Ushaw, yesterday on UA-cam and then your video popped up on my feed. I blame the notorious Council of Vatican II for this decline. So sad, so very sad.
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Apparently it's in considerably worse condition since I made this video - caused by fire and suspected arson :(
Wow
Gone now :(
I can't find any information on the shooting other than this vid.
I got it from a book by Christine Ruskin - The Disappearing Farms of Weardale.
Your vids are great. From a Mini 2 user
Thanks Mark, glad somebody is enjoying them 🙂
Iys actually mesmerizing and simple 👍
Thanks Mark 🙂
Amazing mate.
Cheers, really appreciate you stopping by and watching the video.
This is now historically important footage; a significant part of the neglected areas seen here, have been subject to serious fire damage. Arson is suspected.
i found an interesting old text about high house supplying the durham mint with silver for a short while , your flight crosses over an area with a fault occurs on geological linear data , at 3.20 the fault crosses the wood on the left hand side beggarside , cant find anything else on it sadly
This is hard to imagine that this was producing hundreds and thousands of roof tiles back in its heyday, and now look at it is like a ghost town.. It is so sad to see it like this.😢😔😞
Hiya, What a cool quarry! Did you know there is a band of scientific interest at this quarry! The ownership of the quarry has changed and is now a watersports venue as well.
Hi, thanks for watching. Yes I knew about the SSSI but not that it was a watersports venue - doesn't seem big enough for that!
Another hidden gem that I didn't know about, beautifully filmed as usual. Thanks very much for that John 👍
What a beautiful area...unfortunately this is to be covered in Grey 3m high Solar panels and 6 ft metal security/ deer proof fencing destroying the feeding and nesting habitat for red listed birds and pleasant walk ways for residents of Burnhope and beyond. Durham County Council and local land owners need to lower their heads in shame but when money is involved morals go out of the window. So sad !
